What's a Wiki?

From Wikipedia

"A wiki (IPA: [ˈwiː.kiː] <wee-kee> or [ˈwɪ.kiː] <wick-ee>) is a type of website that allows users to add, remove, or otherwise edit and change all content very quickly and easily, sometimes without the need for registration. This ease of interaction and operation makes a wiki an effective tool for collaborative writing."

In other words, it's a web site that anyone can write an article in.

In Morchaint's words:

"A wiki is a lot like a forum except instead of being post/topic centric it is definition centric. So you take something like CE and everyone can contribute definitions to it, revising, editing and approving one another's content. Then you can also cross reference it to other definitions, such as in this case: Combat Engineering, ACE, etc.

It is great for maintaining a communal informational resource library. So rather then trying to find a post that is stickied in some forum with the definition in it, you'd just search for "CE" and get the appropriate matches back from the wiki."

What's an example of a Wiki?

Wikipedia

If you're not familiar with it, Wikipedia (link above) is the most famous and effective example of a Wiki anywhere. Wikis, not quite by nature but by nearly universal practice, are editable by anyone, and thus everyone can contribute their understanding to the matter at hand. In the case of Wikipedia, people contribute information on just about every subject there is. It is an encyclopedia created by everyone, so the best experts have the ability to contribute the best information. Oddly, Wikis have generally been shown to be just as reliable as closely edited works of similar type. A couple studies have found Wikipedia to be as reliable as the Encyclopedia Brittanica.

What will the Trimmers use a Wiki for

So far, we have brainstormed the following purposes for a Trimmer Wiki:

Policies and Procedures

Divisional Standard Operating Procedures

Such as the Trimmer Way to hold a CC in PlanetSide or the Pulling Method in World of Warcraft or common PvP Tactics in City of Heroes.

Member Profiles and Character Profiles

It can often be useful for fellow Trimmers to know what skills each Trimmer has and what spec or equipment they have. Personal information helps draw us together as a family.

How-To's

Trimmer Lore

The History of our guild, which helps bond us together.

Who can contribute?

EVERYONE CAN CONTRIBUTE! PLEASE CONTRIBUTE!

If you know anything, and all of you do, PLEASE contribute. Please write down anything you know about the guild, anything you want others to know, anything you think others might be interested in knowing.

How can I contribute?

You can contribute by adding an article or editing an existing article.

How do I edit an existing article?

Just click the "Edit" function at the top. Don't be scared. Anything you edit can be put back the way it was VERY easily. All changes and every version is recorded in the system automatically, so any changes can be put back very easily.

How do I create a new article?

Any link with a red tag doesn't exist yet. So just click that red tag and it will take you to the edit page for that article, and start typing!

The editor

  • The basic funcitons of the Wiki editor are in buttons at the top. Just hover your mouse over the buttons to see what they do, and click them to see the formatting they add. Go! Play! Enjoy! It's easy and fun and useful!
  • For more information on using the editor, check Wikipedia Help Page

More Help

  • Consult the User's Guide for information on using the wiki software.
  • Use the Trimmer Wiki Help just like you use the main wiki... when you find a neat tip, add it to the help section!

Why are we using a Wiki?

Its major advantage is the ability to record institutional knowledge. Everything everyone knows about how the Trimmers deal with CE, for example, could be put in the Wiki entry for Combat Engineering, as opposed to just what the available items are, which is already listed here in the existing Planetside Wiki:

http://wiki.planetsidesyndicate.com/index.php?title=Combat_Engineering

SOP tactics for the Trimmers on how to defend a CC, who should be delegated to get the ANT, etc, etc...even what roles are often played by various Trimmer Players.

A wiki entry on Morchaint, for instance, would indicate that he has all support certs and is CR5. He generally is overall leader, but will equally willingly lead a squad or just drive an AMS. Just don't ask him to kill anything with anything but an Orbital Strike.

An entry on me would say pretty much the opposite. That way leaders can get familiar with their assets in a group.

The greatest thing about a Wiki is that while one or more persons should coordinate it, it works on the principle of "Many hands make light work". All that has to be done is for people to contribute what they can and what they know. Individaully, when they feel like it. We can even cut and paste from the forums. So if and when this project gets off the ground, the cordinator can just approach various people with expertise to assist.
